5 Ways to Proactively Protect Your Car Engine

Most of the time, people don’t think about our car engines. They hop into the car and go where they want to go. However, when they start hearing sounds from the car, that’s a sign that the engine is breaking down. You need to look after your car engine, or you'll end up spending so much on it. Here are ways to proactively protect the most important part of your car.
Change Oil Regularly
Oil is the one factor that keeps your engine parts lubricated. Lubrication prevents any overheating. Thus if it takes a long time before you change oil, it might cause permanent damage to your engine parts. If that happens and the engine breaks down, you’ll need to have them replaced at a high cost. The standard recommendation is to change the oil after you’ve driven 5,000 miles. Also, change the oil filter at the same time because it catches debris all the time.

Keep the Cooling System Working
Your car’s cooling system includes the thermostat, radiator, water pump, and coolant. Thus, the best way to protect your engine from the damage caused by overheating is to keep radiator fluid, or coolant, circulating all throughout your car’s engine. Make sure that the coolant is at the right spot between the minimum and maximum marks.

Keep the Engine Breathing

Every car needs constant airflow, just like humans do. Aside from oil, the air is the next important thing that you need to keep circulating inside your engine. Make sure that air circulates within the engine without debris or restriction. Air filters keep all the dirt, leaves, and bugs from getting inside your engine and clogging it.

Check for Leaks
If you can’t see the leak, you can smell it. Always make sure that oil or antifreeze doesn't leak out of your engine. Intense pressure and heat will result from this and will cause the failure of engine hoses. It's a good idea to always check under your hood in case you smell or see any leak. You can find out about this while you park your car on the pavement.

Don’t Wait for Your Gas Tank to Get Empty
Gasoline sediment settles at the bottom of your gas tank if you run your car down to empty. The problem is that the sediment junk that accumulates in the gas tank will cause the fuel system to work harder and harder. As this goes on for years, you should expect permanent damage to your car's engine. Thus, fill your gas tank as often as possible to avoid the sediment to settle in the bottom.

Some Final Words
An ounce of prevention is always better than a ton of cure. Make sure that you remember this while taking care of your engine. Give your engine the best treatment that you can. Don’t forget the cost of getting the engine fixed someday or replacing it with an entirely new one. Get auto insurance today – it will give you all the peace of mind you’ll ever need in case a breakdown happens.

Thanks for helping me understand that the oil or antifreeze is not leaking from the engine which we can smell. I should get the secondhand vehicle that I bought checked this weekend before I use it for a long drive. Its oil coolers, lubricants, and other components must be secure from any leaks and issues for my safety, and I should get parts replaced if needed as well.

It really helped when you said that the oil change has to be done regularly to ensure that overheating can be prevented by proper lubrication. I will keep that in mind when I get a new 6.0 Powerstroke for the used vehicle that I bought this year. It will make the car run better since it's what I can only afford, so I will make sure that I will take care of it as well once it has been installed.
