“Our experience with Desmond Insurance has been great! Because our company is new
and growing at a rapid pace, we require frequent insurance adjustments (changes
in production, new suppliers, increased limits of insurance, etc.). The team at
Desmond Insurance has been phenomenal in this regard. We are always impressed with
their enthusiasm and willingness to quickly address our insurance needs.”

Recommended Bakery Insurance Coverages
Insurance for bakeries or food processing operations falls into three general categories:
- The first is property insurance on the buildings
and the usually substantial amount of business personal property, including machinery,
cooking equipment, point-of-sale systems and stock.
- The second is liability for both premises and baked
or processed goods. (Professional & General Liability)
- The last is protection for worker injuries because these
operations are susceptible to workers comp losses.
Note:
Auto insurance should be procured if the operation owns vehicles and
especially if it does its own transportation and delivery.
Optional Bakery Insurance Coverages to Consider
Inland Marine - Transportation insurance covering finished product sent to
customers is the primary inland marine coverage needed. Keep in mind, this is an
important coverage even if carriers for hire are used to transport finished product.
Crime - The primary crime exposure for bakeries & food processors is employee
theft of inventory. Other similar exposures may be present if retail and wholesale
operations are conducted. Internet sales may create additional exposures.
Surety Coverages - Food processors having contracts to supply products to
government entities are required to provide a contract-performance of service or
supply bond. Other bonds may be required, depending on the actual operations performed
or services provided.
Excess and Umbrella Coverages - Tainted food products can injure great numbers
of people in many different places. Because the dollar impact of the damages can
be catastrophic to a baker or food processor, additional excess or umbrella limits
of insurance are recommended.
